This grant will be used to develop plans for a project that will support those furthest from the labour market in isolated and rural locations. Participants will include people with disabilities or experiencing mental health or physical health conditions, those unemployed for over three years, lone parents, carers, older people and ex-offenders. The development funding will be used for staff costs, research, partnership development activities and technical advice.

Workers' Educational Association aims to help adults increase their knowledge and skills through taking part in training workshops.  With a Lottery award it will buy additional new video equipment to run a project with people who have experienced homelessness.  It will provide training in video and film making techniques and provide these disadvantaged people with a way of expressing their feelings.  The completed films will be shown at a range of festivals.

The Workers Educational Association Scotland have been awarded a grant to carry out tutorial sessions in Glasgow, Highland and West Lothian Areas.  The sessions will also be attended by 60 veterans.  The sessions will bring together the generations and allow them to learn about the war time history of the area and record these details.  The information will be available in the form of a book and a CD.

The application is to establish a national framework for accredited courses in community interpreting and related topics. The training will enable bilingual individuals to maximise their skills as a route into employment, further or higher educational opportunities.

Tandrusti

This is one of 30 communities across England receiving development funding through the Communities Living Sustainably programme to help jump start detailed planning for more sustainable living. They will work in partnership with local people, councils, schools, businesses, and voluntary groups to draw up detailed plans for how their community can become greener. In summer 2012 ten of the communities will receive up to Â£1 million to deliver their ideas and help share the learning with other communities.

This is a development and expansion of an existing project delivered by the Workers' Educational Association in the borough of Dudley. The overall aim of the project is to improve the health and wellbeing of disadvantaged adults living in deprived communities, through the delivery of educational and physical activity programmes.

This group will use funding to encourage local adults to create and maintain an urban community wildlife garden on an area of unused land for the benefit of the community.  This will develop knowledge of the practical skills required to create and maintain a garden and encourage wildlife through learning programmes and activities.

Blooms and Butterflies

This project promotes the benefits of physical activity and healthy living to adults in Stoke-on-Trent. Utilising qualified tutors a range of free health education and physical activity programmes will be delivered. CrÃ¨che facilities will be available and classes include keep fit, toning dance, reflexology and gentle exercise as well as a wider range of activities that address more specific health conditions. Courses will include information on health, diet and nutrition.

This is a project by a registered charity in Canterbury. The group will use the funding to run an IT course for beginners in the local area. This will enable participants to improve their IT skills and life chances.

With an award, this group will employ a development worker to work with organisations to provide courses to meet their users' needs. The courses will be run by specialist tutors and include healthy lifestyles courses, 'look good feel good' courses to give participants a good experience of learning and open doors for them into training or futher education.

Improving Health and Life Chances in South Tyneside

This is a project by charity based in Birmingham serving beneficiaries in Telford and Wrekin. The group will use the funding to provide outreach sessions for older people in sheltered housing. These sessions will include ICT, Arts, Crafts and Health and Fitness courses and will reduce isolation and enable a healthier and more independent community.

Learning in Later Life

This project will deliver a total of 195 learning activities and 65 short courses for parents and children in five target areas in the first year, and a further three areas in the second year.  Activities will be relevant to local people's needs and interests, such as discovering history together in Slough, making a DVD about issues affecting the community in Barnsley, which may include the impact of recent floods, or developing practical 'beach school' activities in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

All Of Us Together: WEA Family Learning for Social Cohesion

This project will continue and develop work to improve the health and well-being of adults in Stoke through educational programmes. It will improve health and fitness levels through a range of physical activity programmes, healthy eating and healthy lifestyle courses. Health-related basic literacy and  numeracy programmes will be delivered to help people understand their own health problems and concerns. Training and support will be provided around the use of the internet and social networking.

This project supported by the University of Leicester will aim to determine the barriers to regular exercise, which individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities face, and how they can be overcome. The applicant states that a high proportion of the West Midlands population is overweight compared with the national average, particularly individuals from BME communities. The project will work with 200 health-deprived adults to address the barriers to participation.
