Towards the cost of supporting Ahmed Aden's living costs while he pursues a one-year Foundation Course in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Bristol. Ahmed was put forward as a candidate for a bursary in conversation with Beth Wilson and Ruth Soandro-Jones. He is 20 years old and from the Horn of Africa (he came to Bristol as a teenager and came to BRR through 1625ip). He has received funding for his tuition costs but had urgent need for living costs of approx £410.14 per month = 4921.68 for a year Agreed with Bina to fund Ahmed for a full year, so he can focus on his education. Agreed to add an admin fee of £100 for BRR to hold the grant (they intend to pay him termly) and for us to have an evaluation at the end (they have asked if he can submit a report each term). 200 phone/data packages over 4 months to people seeking asylum and new refugees. This will give them the resources to access our new online and telephone services.

Combating Tech Inequality Project

Towards responding to the needs of Refugees and Asylum Seekers during the Coronavirus outbreak. The grant will cover shared translation budget for a leaflet, one-month interpreter costs, essential phone costs, laptops, destitution payments and some food provision.

We run a Welcome Centre for asylum seekers and new refugees in the centre of Bristol 3 days each week over 48 weeks of the year.  The Centre has developed over the course of 10 years with regular input from members (asylum seekers and refugees) who are encouraged to be involved in the running of the organisation from the time they join.  The organisation offers free English classes, computer classes, trips, advocacy and information, support with asylum applications, opportunities to take part in public speaking, to train to be an interpreter; families can use the Early Years project for children under 5, and more.  At the heart of the Centre there is a space for members to meet each other, develop friendships, and obtain emotional and wellbeing support.  They can access: a cooked meal, refreshments, games, arts and crafts, destitution bags, a free haircut, massages, community interpreters, be referred to the Bristol Bike Project, see the asylum nurse, meet with a mental health volunteer from MIND and more.  Additionally the organisation works in partnership with other groups in the city to host an event on Human Rights Day each year and activities and celebrations within National Refugee Week.  Last year at least 850 asylum seekers and new refugees benefited from our Welcome Centre.

This project will provide a creche for refugee and asylum seeker children. Children will increase communication skills, increase their physical safety and improve their relationships with adults.

The organisation will use the funding to hold a summer picnic for newly arrived asylum seekers as well as more established refugees. This will enable the organisation to celebrate the impact and contributions refugees have brought to the city by holding a large social event.

Beyond the Borders Picnic - a celebration of refuge

Awards were made to philanthropists, foundations and grant making organisations to match funds raised on a pound for pound basis, to increase the support to the sector.

This project will provide support to refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol who have been given permission to remain in the UK. The project aims to reduce isolation and alleviate anxiety, raise confidence and self esteem and increase chances of integration and employment. The VOICE course brings together people with lived experience of the asylum process in the UK, and volunteers who have experience in developing skills in public speaking and use of voice.  After training, participants are able to articulate in English the challenges and injustices they have faced, in order to educate and influence policy makers and practitioners. This grant supports one day per week of a project coordinator’s time to enable the VOICE course to continue for a further year, enabling them to take advantage of opportunities to influence the agenda in Bristol so that refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed and provided with opportunities to integrate in the city.

Bristol Refugee Rights provides a whole range of support for refugees and asylum seekers from food to classes. The Welcome Centre provides a place for people to come together, get involved, learn and support others as well as access the help they need.

This is a project by a community group in Bristol. The group will use the funding to provide asylum seekers and refugees with healthy meals and training in food preparation to help improve physical and mental wellbeing.
