The British Red Cross Society will recruit and train three volunteer educators to deliver free first aid training sessions in Blaenau Ffestiniog. This meets the Awards for All aim of 'increasing skills and creativity'. This grant for Â£4,842 will fund training costs, venue hire, volunteer expenses, resuscitation mannequins and bilingual first aid booklets.

London Refugee Unit

The Dial a Ride service operated by the British Red Cross will be able to offer a range of outings to people who are unable use public transport particularly the elderly and wheelchair users.. Three trips a month to local garden centres, villages and places of interest will be organised and a Lottery award will pay for a driver, entrance fees and a newsletter to advertise the new outings.

This project will co-ordinate a daily check on older people over 60 who live alone in the Ince ward of Wigan. On weekday mornings older people will put a numbered indicator in their front window, which young volunteers will check on their way to school. If it is missing or incorrect, the young volunteer will raise the alarm and a service co-ordinator will check the situation. They will also do home visits and arrange safety and fire checks. This will provide improved peace of mind for older people.

This group provides support and information for people in need. The grant will be used to purchase two carry chairs, two spinal boards, two scoop stretchers two stretche, two kit bags, eight backpacks, 16 torches, blankets, two defibrillators, 10 x10 radios, projector and a mannequin.

A project to extend the service of this group who offer support to people who have been discharged from hospital in Sandwell. The grant will pay for volunteer expenses, materials and promotion, additional office admin and management and volunteer training.

Vital Help and Support for Patients

The Daily Living Centre is a branch of the British Red Cross.  The centre provides free impartial advice and information about available equipment for people with disabilities to help them maintain an active and independent lifestyle.  A Lottery award will pay for the development of a new display area specifically designed to provide information for young people aged up to 18.

The British Red Cross Society will provide a refugee and asylum seeker support service in Leicester for around 3,000 individuals and families. Working with the Leicester City of Sanctuary it aims to address issues such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, skills development, stigma and isolation. The new project will look into issues around mental health and well-being.

This is the expansion of a project supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Luton and Essex. Alongside support with immediate basic needs such as sleeping bags, food parcels and temporary accommodation, people will be offered social activities, peer support, volunteering opportunities, help with applying for support from local authorities and familiarisation tours of the local area. The group will work with the local community and media to promote positive messages about refugees and asylum seekers.

Supporting refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in Luton and Essex

The British Red Cross will support recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers to help them recover from crisis, improve their standard of living, reduce isolation and improve their health and well-being. It will work with Upbeat Communities and the Multi-Faith Centre to help individuals and families to adapt to their new environment. Immediate support will include emergency supplies and then additional support for up to two years.

Supporting Refugees and Asylum Seekers to Survive and Thrive in Derby

A project to support older people who are isolated and vulnerable older people experiencing crisis or at risk of crisis due to significant life changes such as bereavement, retirement, illness, injury, dementia, and disability. The scheme which will benefit 1000 older people will provide practical, emotional and social support to help beneficiaries identify and explore the best options for maintaining independence in their own home.

The British Red Cross is already subsidising the costs of the VCSEP with its own funding, and will continue to do so alongside Government grant funding. A contribution of 200,000 from DCMS is critical in enabling the VCSEP to scale up its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing vital coordination and support to a wider network of charities and communities on the ground. By funding dedicated staff time, we enable the VCSEP staff to focus on delivery of the VCSEPs COVID-19 coordination only, rather than delivering this in a part time capacity alongside their regular charity (British Red Cross and others) work. This will facilitate a much more effective and efficient response which is necessary in the face of a fast-moving emergency.
